Sports & Recreation Secretary Henry Neumann told CARIBBEAN BUSINESS that by the end of 2010 there will be a new soccer stadium built in the Country Club area of Carolina to meet growing island enthusiasm with the sport. The project is called Proyecto Gol and will cost an estimated $5 million to build.
“Soccer is currently the sport with the most growth in Puerto Rico. We are supporting the Puerto Rican Soccer Federation by providing it with property we have in Country Club,” Neumann explained.
The stadium will have a capacity for more than 5,000 spectators and will be converted into the entertainment center for all soccer games. Half the funding for this project will come from the Sports & Recreation Department and the other half will come from FIFA, the Fédération Internationale de Football Association.
Neumann also revealed there would be three soccer parks built in Aguadilla for the use of children and young adults. The parks will be constructed for competitions, soccer training and to help push the sport in Puerto Rico. This investment will cost the department $1.5 million and is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2010.
“These projects will certainly generate employment and help with the growth of the sport,” the secretary enthusiastically said.
