In the past nine years, Gavin Glinton has been involved with a variety of teams, levels of soccer and even positions.
He has played with three Major League Soccer teams and two United Soccer Leagues teams (and been cut from one of those, too). He has played at the college level and coached there, too. He has represented his home country of Turks and Caicos in international play.
It has been a long journey to the Carolina RailHawks, but all that matters to coach Martin Rennie is that Glinton is here.
"Yeah. Oh, yeah. He's a really good player," Rennie said simply. "He's a good player and an important player for us."
Of every RailHawk who has played more than one game, Glinton, 30, has the second-fewest minutes, with 354 in 10 appearances. Yet he is tied for the team lead in goals with three and second in points with seven.
Today at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, in his first home start of the season and third start overall, Glinton's scoring will become more important than ever in a 7 p.m. game against the Puerto Rico Islanders, ranked second in the league.
Two of Glinton's three goals this season came with less than five minutes off the clock after he subbed in -- one of them came only one minute later. He's not promising that from the start of the clock today, but he will try.
"I hope so. I'd like to get a couple in the first three minutes, if we can," he said with a laugh.
Glinton has been known as a goal-scorer wherever he has played. With the USL's Charleston Battery in 2006, he scored 13 goals in 25 games. With the Los Angeles Galaxy of MLS in 2007, he scored four in 19 appearances. He is the Turks and Caicos national team's leading goal-scorer. Sure, that's with four recorded, but the team has existed only since 1999.
It's one of the many places he has called home since graduating from Illinois' Bradley University. After becoming the first player in the Missouri Valley Conference to be voted all-conference four times, he was drafted 25th overall by the Galaxy. The first year he was there, the Galaxy won a championship. He said he played "a decent amount," and things were going well. Then trouble started.
"I broke my ankle at the end of that year," Glinton said. "Second year, I got traded to Dallas [FC], broke my ankle again. Just didn't bounce back so well, so I retired."
He headed back to Bradley, where he served as an assistant coach for Jim DeRose, who had coached Glinton. The two years he spent as assistant, he says, have made him a better player.
"I think it made me smarter as a player -- a little bit more aware of the bigger picture," he said.
Teammate and roommate John Cunliffe sees evidence of that.
"He had to explain the game to other guys," Cunliffe said, "and that probably helps him understand the game a lot better, too."
After two years at Bradley, Glinton got the itch to play again.
On his first trial, with the now-defunct Virginia Beach Mariners of the USL, he got cut. On his next attempt, he was picked up by the USL's Charleston Battery, where he had a successful 2006 season.
After another year with the Galaxy and one with MLS' San Jose Earthquakes, Glinton finds himself in Cary with the RailHawks, preparing for Puerto Rico
The Islanders have a huge lead in goals scored. In five games against Carolina, Puerto Rico is 4-0-1, with a 9-1 goal differential.
"Puerto Rico are obviously one of the teams that you know are really good, so you judge how far you've come and how far you have to go by how you do against a team like that," Rennie said.
And Glinton's scoring and leadership ability could be just what the RailHawks need.
"He understands the game a lot better than some of the younger guys," Cunliffe said. "So obviously in these big games, we need guys who are intelligent and can play well through the game."

Gol del delantero Randi Patterson al minuto 30, junto a una aguerrida defensa en el resto de la jornada, resultó más que suficiente para que el Battery de Charleston venciera anoche a los Islanders de Puerto Rico, creando un intercambio en los primeros dos puestos del torneo Primera División de la 'United Soccer Leagues' (USL).
Los Islanders, que tenían tres victorias seguidas y seis partidos en línea sin derrotas, cayeron al segundo puesto al terminar justamente su primera mitad de la campaña 2009 con 25 puntos acumulados, por virtud de siete triunfos y cuatro empates en 15 presentaciones.
Charleston subió al tope con siete ganados y seis empates también en 15 salidas para 27 unidades. Es apenas el segundo triunfo del Battery en serie regular sobre 'La Tropa Naranja' en la historia de la USL.
Y al igual que sus dos previos duelos el pasado fin de semana en Bayamón con sendos triunfos 1-0 para Puerto Rico, fue otra intensa batalla, esta vez ante 4,681 espectadores en el Blackbaud Stadium de Charleston.
La igualdad, no obstante, fue quebrada en un fugaz contragolpe del Battery, que terminó con Patterson superando al portero isleño Bill Gaudette para marcar la anotación decisiva.
El conjunto isleño salió decidido a buscar el empate, que nunca llegó. Quizás la mejor opción fueen el tiempo de descuento, en un tiro de esquina, que John Krause, en función de suplente, estuvo cerca de conseguir el empate y de emular su gol decisivo del jueves pasado en 'La Islandera, pero la defensa de Charleston resistió.
La jugada terminó con una refriega entre ambos bandos, pero sin consecuencias mayores.
El conjunto anaranjado, en medio de una gira de ocho partidos consecutivos de USL en la carretera, tendrán mañana otra dura prueba con visita a los Carolina Railhawks, sus más cercanos perseguidores y ocupantes de la tercera posición con 24 puntos.

Charleston- En la noche de ayer la Tropa Naranja cayó 1-0 frente al Battery de Charleston, luego de a verle propinado dos derrotas consecutivas la semana pasada en el pasto del Cementerio. Esta es la segunda vez en la historia de enfrentamientos entre los dos archirrivales en el cual el Battery sale airoso de un enfrentamiento.
La Tropa Naranja salió con un cuadro veterano, con miras a ganar el partido. En el ataque Clarke comenzó con Noel y Addlery, en el medio campo Delgado, Marcelin, Gbandi, Steele, y en la línea defensiva, Veris, Arrieta, Henry, y Jones. La Tropa Naranja salió a buscar el encuentro, pero el empuje defensivo y los contragolpes de Charleston probaron ser demasiados para los visitantes.
En el minuto 26 en un contragolpe, el delantero del Battery Randi Patterson logro aprovecharse de un descuido en la defensa naranja, Gaudette no pudo atajar el balón que le paso entre las piernas y el marcador se puso 1-0 a favor de los locales.
Los Naranjas nuevamente se tiraron al ataque, pero el sistema defensivo de Charleston fue lo suficiente para aguantar el empuje del ataque. Aun cuando Jagdeosingh entro al campo en el los últimos 15 minutos, el trinitense no pudo hacer nada para empatar el partido. El partido fue dominado completamente por el medio campo de Puerto Rico, pero el error defensivo le costó el partido a los Islanders.
Sevilla FC se apunta 3 puntos en Carolina
En su primer partido como coach interino del Sevilla FC, el joven Gustavo Cañavate se agenció 3 puntos para la filial nervionense, en Puerto Rico, al derrotar 2-1 a los dirigidos por Larracuente. El antes técnico sevillista Carlos Torro fue despedido luego de la derrota ante Academia Quintana. Gustavo fue clave durante el triunfo del Sevilla sobre el Fluminense. El joven comento que era un cambio necesario, refiriéndose al despido de Carlos Toro.
Al minuto 42 del partido, Alberto “Cuba” Delgado puso al Sevilla en el marcador, llevándose a los junqueños al descanso en victoria.
Al minuto 51 Leonel Jackson del conjunto gigante logro anotar, igualando el marcador. A lo que el conjunto sevillista se tiro al ataque, terminando por dominar el resto del partido. Al minuto 91 Héctor “Pito” Ramos anoto el gol de la victoria, acercando al Sevilla a la cima del tablón de posiciones. CHARLESTON, SC -- The Charleston Battery halted its two-match losing streak Tuesday night topping the Puerto Rico Islanders 1-0 at Blackbaud Stadium. Randi Patterson netted the game’s only goal, his fourth on the season, catapulting the Battery over the Islanders to the top of the USL-1 table with 27 points.
Dusty Hudock faced nine shots, making four saves on the night including a flurry of shots in the final ten minutes of the match to a league-leading nine clean sheets on the season.
“We got the early goal and put them under pressure early and Dusty did a great job keeping them off the scoreboard,” said Battery head coach Mike Anhaeuser.
Playing in front of a national television audience, the Battery featured an all black kit to pay tribute to Battery COO Betsy McAdams, who lost her battle with brain cancer last Thursday. The commemorative jerseys were part of a silent auction during the match raising more than $10,000 for the Betsy McAdams Memorial Endowment to benefit the Costal Community Foundation. McAdams worked in the Battery organization from the club’s inception in 1993.
Facing the Islanders for a third consecutive match—dropping two games last weekend at Puerto Rico, both by 1-0 results on late goals—the Battery knew what to expect coming in.
“You know their strengths and they know your strengths, so it just comes down to who gets that goal and who has the grit to hold on,” Anhaeuser said.
After end-to-end play in the opening half hour, Patterson finished a tidy Kenji Treschuk flick inside the six-yard box off a cross from defender Frankie Sanfilippo. Unmarked on the far post, Patterson had time to settle the ball and pick his spot at the far post past a helpless Bill Gaudette.
With the Islanders pushing hard for a goal in the second half, Darren Spicer nearly put the game out of reach, connecting nicely with Scott Buete down the middle of the park only to push the ball just over the crossbar.
In the final minutes of the match and Puerto Rico pushing numbers into the penalty area, tempers boiled over and a melee in front of the Battery goal ensued.
The win moves the Battery to 7-2-6 (27 points) in league play.
The Battery host MLS side CD Chivas USA in the third round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Tuesday night Blackbaud Stadium. Chivas currently holds second place in the Western Conference at 8-4-3. It is the first meeting between the two clubs.
The Battery does not return to league action until its July 5 fixture at Montreal.

After an eight-day layoff, the Carolina RailHawks return to the field on Saturday at 7 p.m., when they will face the Puerto Rico Islanders at WakeMed Soccer Park.
Puerto Rico enters the week atop the USL-1 table with 25 points, while Carolina and Charleston are tied for second place with 24. Portland (23 points) is also lurking near the top.
Before coming to Cary on Saturday, Puerto Rico will wrap up its season series with the Battery in Charleston on Thursday. What happens at Blackbaud Stadium will determine what is at stake on Saturday at WakeMed Soccer Park.
In order for the RailHawks to claim sole possession of first place, they need Puerto Rico and Charleston to tie on Thursday night and they need to beat the Islanders on Saturday. If Charleston and Carolina both beat Puerto Rico, the Battery and RailHawks would be tied for first place.
The RailHawks and Islanders enter the weekend on opposite streaks. The RailHawks are 1-2-2 in the month of June and are winless over their last four matches (including the U.S. Open Cup). Puerto Rico, meanwhile, is unbeaten over its last six outings (5-0-1). Five weeks ago, the Islanders were 2-1-2 and in sixth place in the USL-1 with eight points.
“I think they’re one of the best teams, not only in our league but in the whole CONCACAF region. So we know they’re a good team,” said RailHawks coach Martin Rennie. “I know it will be a big test and I think we’ll do well. I know having a week to prepare will help us a lot and getting a couple players back from injury will be big for us, too.”
In five previous meetings, the RailHawks are 0-4-1 against the Islanders, and Puerto Rico has outscored Carolina 9-1 in those five games. In 2008, the RailHawks did not score a goal against Puerto Rico in any of their three matches.
But prior to this year, the RailHawks had never won a season opener, never won three games in a row (let alone four or five), nor ever defeated Rochester. Carolina has accomplished all of those things this season.
SCOUTING PUERTO RICO
After floundering early in the season, the Islanders (7-3-4) enter the weekend riding a six-match unbeaten streak (5-0-1). They shot to the top of the USL-1 table last weekend after beating Charleston 1-0 twice in three days in Bayamón to end the Battery’s 12-match unbeaten streak.
The Islanders have scored a league-high 21 goals this season, and the 16 goals they’ve allowed is tied for the third most. The goal differential of plus-5 is tied with the RailHawks for second best in the USL-1. The Islanders have three shutouts to their credit, tied with five other teams for the second fewest in the league, while they have been shutout only twice, tied with Vancouver for fewest in the league.
Defender Cristian Arrieta leads the league in goals (six) and points (15), while forward Nicholas Adderly’s four goals leave him tied with three others for second most in the league. Defender John Krause has also scored three goals.
Bill Gaudette, the 2008 USL-1 Goalkeeper of the Year, leads all USL-1 goalkeepers in minutes (1,260), wins (seven) and saves (61), and his 1.14 goals against averages rates seventh.
Jonny Steele, the 2008 USL-1 MVP, has two goals and an assist in nine appearances this season.
SERIES HISTORY
Saturday’s match will mark the first of three meetings between Carolina and Puerto Rico in 2009. They will meet again at WakeMed Soccer Park on Sept. 12 and at Juan Ramon Loubriel Stadium in Bayamón on Sept. 14.
The RailHawks are 0-4-1 against the Islanders all time, and Puerto Rico has outscored Carolina 9-1 in those five games. The RailHawks have not led the Islanders for any minute in their five previous meetings.

The RailHawks earned a point at Austin on June 19 with a 1-1 tie at Nelson Field. Matt Watson put the RailHawks up 1-0 in the 17th minute with his first goal of the season. But Austin’s Eddie Johnson equalized for the home side and the match ended in a draw. In two trips to Austin, the RailHawks have earned four points this season. Luego de una agotadora serie en la carretera, con resultados dispares, las Puerto Rico Capitals, regreserán al estadio Paquito Montaner de Ponce, para cumplir con los últimos tres encuentros de la serie regular. el sábado 27 de junio enfrentarán a Miami Kickers F.C, el sábado 11 de julio a Florida Surge y cerrarán el 18 de julio con Clearwater Galactics Amazons.
Si bien la clasificación a los playoffs es casi una utopía matemática, será de suma importancia que las Capitals, logren la mayor cantidad de puntos posibles en estos tres desafios, por dos simples razones, la primera obviamente lograr la posición más arriba posible en la la tabla de su división, y la otra para demostrar que este equipo es capaz de lograr grandes metas en un futuro no muy lejano.
Por ello convocamos a todos los fanáticos y amigos del fútbol, a concurrir y alentar a nuestras jóvenes talentos.
Prueba de que ya las Capitals están dando que hablar es el hecho de que su Capitana, Denisse Soltero fué incluída en el equipo de la semana anterior.
Soltero es la líder goleadora de las Puerto Rico Capitals FC, que hacen campaña en la Women’s Premier Soccer League (WPSL) y que tuvieron una congestionada agenda la pasada semana. Soltero logró tres anotaciones en los partidos de las Capitals contra Thomasville, donde el equipo cien por ciento de jugadoras boricuas sumó la histórica primera victoria de la franquicia.
El pasado miércoles, cuando las Capitals empataron con las Dragons de Thomasville 2-2 para sumar su primer punto de la campaña, Soltero anotó un gol. El jueves, en la victoria 4-1 ante las Dragons, Soltero sumó otros dos para elevar su total en la temporada a cuatro.
Esa actuación le valió a Soltero una mención honorable en la cuarta edición del equipo de la semana de la WPSL.
BAYAMÓN - El estadio Juan Ramón Loubriel bayamonés estaba ayer contagiado por la fiebre del Soccer Blast, desde el estacionamiento hasta el campo transformado en ocho canchas y pasando por los pasillos de acceso y los graderíos.
Decenas de equipos vieron acción ayer en la primera de las cuatro jornadas que durará este torneo, el más grande campeonato infantil y juvenil de su tipo que se disputa en el Caribe y que este año cuenta con la participación de más de 2,000 jugadores distribuidos en 290 equipos.
“Estamos muy orgullosos de este torneo”, dijo Robert Rodríguez, productor del evento desde sus orígenes en el 2005. “Estamos orgullosos incluso de que otras organizaciones estén intentando emular al Soccer Blast porque eso significa que hay más taller para los jugadores”.
Mientras, sobre una cancha un jugador celebraba con un “avioncito” un gol que acababa de marcar, mientras era perseguido por sus jubilosos compañeros de equipo. Su mamá festejaba con una gran algarabía en las gradas, como si se tratara del mismísimo Cristiano Ronaldo haciendo un gol en la UEFA.
“Esto es un ejemplo de la tendencia de crecimiento del fútbol en Puerto Rico”, dijo Rodríguez mientras sonreía con la escena de celebración. “Aquí hay equipos que empiezan a practicar desde que acaban el torneo para la edición del año siguiente”.
Finalizado un choque, los ganadores se aprestaban a “observar” a su rival siguiente, y los perdedores se daban ánimo para buscar la victoria en su siguiente duelo, ya que cada equipo tiene garantizado disputar al menos dos juegos antes de ser eliminado.
“Es un torneo con características bien especiales”, describió Rodríguez. “Aquí no hay coach en la cancha, lo que hay es un chaperón que acompaña a los jugadores. Tampoco permitimos la entrada (a la cancha) de los padres. Los propios muchachos son los que se dirigen en la cancha porque lo que buscamos es promover esa disciplina y desarrollo de carácter en los jugadores. Ellos son el show, y eso se lo dejamos bien claro a los padres y entrenadores desde el principio”.
Y si de disciplina se trata, los organizadores son el ejemplo. Los partidos empiezan puntuales. La seguridad y equipos de emergencias médicas están siempre atentos, y toda la logística está bien afinada y con la experiencia de las ediciones anteriores.
“Si alguien es expulsado (del torneo) no se le permite regresar al torneo”, afirmó Rodríguez.
Mientras, la acción proseguía ininterrumpidamente sobre las canchas, con los estallidos de las celebraciones luego de cada gol, y las decenas de niños y niñas, muchachos y muchachas, disfrutándose el fútbol, dirigiéndose ellos mismo sobre el terreno en busca del triunfo.
Por tercera ocasión seguida, pero esta vez fuera de casa, los Islanders de Puerto Rico tendrán hoy de frente al Battery de Charleston en lucha por el puntero del torneo Primera División de la United Soccer Leagues (USL).
La cita será a las 8:00 p.m. en el Blackbaud Stadium de Charleston, donde el Battery está invicto en seis salidas este año, incluyendo tres victorias.

Stephen Armstrong sprints down the practice field just outside Blackbaud Stadium battling a teammate for a loose ball. At the last instant, he lowers his upper body and using all the power in his sinewy frame, shoulders the defender off the ball.
With the ball won, in typical Armstrong fashion he trips the defender for good measure and crosses it into the penalty box. He turns to his fallen teammate, and with a sly smile, offers a helping hand up and the two jog off.
It has been more than a month since Armstrong has played in a game for the Charleston Battery. The veteran midfielder, who has missed the last dozen matches with an injured ankle, is hoping that his time on the sidelines comes to an end today when the Battery takes on the Puerto Rico Islanders at 8 p.m. at Blackbaud Stadium.
"I think mentally this has been the toughest injury I've had to deal with," said Armstrong, who has appeared in just three games this season. "Watching game after game has been tough, despite the fact that we've been doing well. I'm not sure why this injury has been mentally tougher than some in the past, but it has and I can't wait to get back out on the field."
Armstrong has battled through a recurring ankle injuring he suffered during the indoor season that has limited him to a total of 88 minutes of action. He was finally cleared to play this week and will most likely be used as a substitute against the Islanders.
"The ankle feels great. I had a couple of full training sessions this week, so I feel like I'm ready to go," Armstrong said. "The biggest concern is getting my match sharpness and fitness back. I've been working hard during the rehab process, but you can do as much bike riding, running and gym exercises as you want. It doesn't equal a game. All that fitness doesn't help your timing with your teammates. That's only going to come during a game."
Head coach Mike Anhaeuser said he doesn't want to rush Armstrong back into the lineup. He has 21 goals over the last three seasons with the Battery.
"We've still got a lot of the season left, so I don't want to put him out there and have him get injured again," Anhaeuser said. "I'm definitely going to try and get him in the game. Hopefully, we'll be able to use him the final 20 minutes, but that's the most we'll see him. He's the kind of player that can come in at the end of the game and make an impact. I know Stephen is anxious to get back out there, but we're going to bring him along slowly."
Two players that Anhaeuser won't have to pick from tonight are midfielders Ian Fuller and Tsuyoshi Yoshitake, both of whom are out with hamstring injuries. Yoshitake is the team's leading scorer with seven points on two goals and three assists. Fuller could be out as long as four weeks.
"We're not sure how severe Ian's injury is," Anhaeuser said. "Hopefully it's not too bad, but he's going to miss some matches. Tsuyoshi is starting to train again, so hopefully he's back next week."
After going unbeaten in the first 14 matches of the season, the Battery dropped back-to-back 1-0 games to the Islanders this past weekend.
"It was a tough weekend, but Puerto Rico is a very, very good team," said Battery defender Nelson Akwari. "I'm not disappointed in the way we played, I'm disappointed that we could have gotten better results. We had some chances to win both games or at least come out with a draw. Hopefully, the fact that we're playing on our home field will push us over the top."

Los Islanders de Puerto Rico buscarán esta noche completar la barrida de tres partidos ante el Battery de Charleston y, de una vez, mantener el primer lugar de la United Soccer Leagues cuando ambos clubes se enfrenten en el Blackbaud Stadium de Carolina del Sur a partir de las 8:00 p.m..
La “Tropa Naranja” ganó la semana pasada los dos partidos ante el Battery en el estadio Juan Ramón Loubriel, ambos por marcador idéntico de 1-0, y ya suma seis partidos en línea sin perder.
Con las dos victorias, los Islanders regresaron al primer lugar de la liga, con marca de siete victorias, tres derrotas y cuatro empates, suficiente para 25 puntos. No obstante, el Battery y los RailHawks de Carolina asechan el puntero, ambos con 24 tantos.
“Estoy muy satisfecho con las dos blanqueadas, es algo en lo que hemos estado trabajando y necesitábamos evitar conceder esos goles fáciles. Ahora necesitamos mantenernos así, no podemos relajarnos, y debemos asegurarnos que mañana (esta noche) trabajemos más duro de lo que lo hemos hecho en los últimos seis partidos”, expresó ayer a Primera Hora el director técnico Colin Clarke vía telefónica desde Charleston.
El partido de esta noche será el primero de un fin de semana ajetreado para los naranja. El sábado, los Islanders tendrán otro crucial partido cuando visiten a los RailHawks, por lo que Clarke ya adelantó que hará algunas variaciones a la alineación para mantener al equipo descansado. “Haremos un poco de cambios, pondremos un grupo mañana (esta noche) y traeremos piernas frescas el sábado. Siempre creemos que tenemos un equipo fuerte en la cancha”, sostuvo.
El técnico añadió que el equipo que hizo el viaje está libre de lesiones. Sin embargo, el mediocampista puertorriqueño Andrés Cabrero permaneció en la Isla en lo que se recupera de una dolencia.
Cambian fecha de la ida
La Concacaf reorganizó el calendario de la Liga de Campeones, e informó que el partido de ida entre los Islanders y el Toronto FC de la ronda preliminar se celebrará el 29 de julio en Canadá. La vuelta se mantiene para el 4 de agosto en el Loubriel.

El Club Atlético River Plate Ponce no quiere entrar esta vez en pugnas verbales con sus homólogos en la Puerto Rico Soccer League (PRSL).
Pero el estar ahora invictos y en la cima, les hace sentir cómo patriarcas de la nueva edición del torneo en el que el buscan el título que se les escapó en el 2008 y la oportunidad real de medir fuerzas en la Liga de Campeones de la CONCACAF.
El domingo el conjunto riverplatense sacudió como todo un ‘Padre’ con marcador de 4-1 al Club Atlético de San Juan en el Estadio Francisco ‘Paquito’ Montaner ante cerca de 3 mil hinchas.
“Somos los padres de ellos (del Atlético de San Juan)”, dijo de forma jocosa el apoderado del River, Steven Alvarez. “El año pasado le ganamos en una ocasión y quizás para la misma fecha 5-1. Somos los padres de ellos”, agregó.
El River Plate Ponce superó un déficit de 0-1 en los primeros 16 minutos de acción, para finalizar con un holgado triunfo el domingo de 4-1 y así consolidarse en el primer lugar de la tabla de posiciones de la PRSL.
Pero las aspiraciones del River van mas allá de ganar el título de la PRSL y del buen trabajo realizado por el novel dirigente y ex capitán Walter Fabián Zermattén.
“Nosotros, después de la temporada pasada, sabíamos que el nivel iba a subir y que había mucho potencial”, indicó Alvarez. “Este año nuestra mira es ganar el campeonato y competir en la CONCACAF con un equipo sólido y que pueda ganar también esa liga. Creo que este equipo tiene las posibilidades de hacerlo. Hemos entrado con esa expectativa y obviamente hemos trabajado con humildad. Pero estamos decididos a buscar el campeonato”, aseguró.
En el 2008, el entonces Bayamón Sevilla FC –hoy Sevilla FC de Juncos- se proclamó campeón de la primera edición de la PRSL en la final ante el River Plate Ponce.
Actividad en Ponce
Por otro lado, Alvarez anunció que el próximo sábado su organización estará realizando un asado en el Hotel Hilton de Ponce en donde participarán todos los integrantes del club.
El evento, así como todos los partidos del River Plate, será transmitido por www.futbolboricua.net.
La dirigencia del equipo Herediano se vio sorprendida por la modificación que realizó la CONCACAF en el calendario de la ronda preliminar de la Liga de Campeones, en el cual el equipo florense ya no abrirá la serie contra el Cruz Azul de visitante en el estadio Azul, sino que lo tendrá que hacer en el estadio Eladio Rosabal Cordero el jueves 30 de julio a las 8:00 p.m., y jugará el partido de vuelta el miércoles 5 de agosto en el estadio Azul en México.
La CONCACAF informó sobre los cambios en un comunicado oficial enviado a los 24 clubes que participarán en el evento. Según el ente que rige el balompié del área, las modificaciones se debieron a exigencias de las empresas televisivas ESPN y Univisión, las cuales mantienen los derechos de televisión.
“Favor de tomar nota que se requirió hacer cambios incluyendo, cambios en la fecha y horario de saque inicial y cambio de los días de juego para acomodar los horarios para nuestros socios de transmisiones. Les agradecemos por su comprensión y cooperación”, reza el comunicado firmado por Ted Howard, miembro de la CONCACAF.
Ante los cambios, la dirigencia del Herediano se comunicó de inmediato con el señor Ted Howard, expresando la oposición al cambio, sin embargo, el representante de la CONCACAF aseguró que no es posible complacer a ningún equipo porque son decisiones basadas en los requerimientos de las empresas de televisión.
“Nosotros queríamos cerrar la serie contra el Cruz Azul en casa e hicimos saber nuestra posición a la CONCACAF, sin embargo, es imposible echar marcha atrás el cambio porque depende de las televisoras que son el patrocinador principal del evento”, explicó Carlos Salas, gerente general del Herediano. La dirigencia del equipo florense ya enteró al cuerpo técnico sobre la modificación para que tome en cuenta esta situación.
Iván prestado a Santos y Gerland no sigue
El portero Iván García fue cedido a préstamo al equipo Santos de Guápiles, con el fin de darle la oportunidad de adquirir ritmo de competencia, pues en el equipo Herediano no lo tenía por la presencia de los porteros Ricardo González y Adrián De Lemos. Con la salida de García, se ascendió al primer equipo al joven Jonathan Valerio. Por otra parte, el cuerpo técnico determinó la no contratación del delantero Yerland Mc Donald luego de valorarlo durante casi tres semanas, por lo que el jugador ya dejó las filas del Herediano. Cabe destacar que el jugador no mantenía contrato con los florenses, por lo que su salida se dio sin mayor problema.

With Toronto FC’s 6-1 victory over the Montreal Impact on Thursday in the final game of the Nutrilite Canadian Championship, the Major League Soccer side claimed its first berth in the Champions League and will open at home against the Puerto Rico Islanders on Wednesday, July 29. Se ha concluido una jornada más en el futbol de Puerto Rico, y por primera vez el River Plate Ponce logra consolidarse como líder solitario en la punta de la tabla de posiciones. Esto a medida de que mantuvo su invicto en su casa frente al Atlético San Juan. La segunda vez que estos oncenos se miden en el Montaner y en ambas ocasiones el onceno rojiblanco ha ganado por goleada estrepitosa. Aun siendo goleados, los guerreros capitalinos lograron una victoria en esta jornada ya que vencieron 2-0 al conjunto tuso de Humacao. En el encuentro del viernes el fluminense logro una victoria 3-0 sobre el Caguas Huracán. Sorpresivamente el Sevilla FC de Juncos cayó frente a un inspirado equipo de la Academia Quintana 2-1 el sábado en la tarde-noche y en el último enfrentamiento del domingo Bayamón logro robarse un punto luego de que Carolina saliera anotando primero. Terminaron empatados 1-1.
Los Islanders de Puerto Rico lograron agenciarse de la primera posición de la Primera División de la USL al agenciarle sus dos primeras derrotas al Battery de Charleston. La tropa Naranja gano en partidos de jueves y Sábado 1-0 con goles de Krause y de Addlery. Durante el partido se formo una controversia por una pancarta que alzo el OSU, pidiéndole a Colín Clarke que no pusiera al jugador #8 Mediate.
Esta semana me gustaría enviarle un mensaje a los editores de los periódicos más grandes de Puerto Rico. Hoy tuve la dicha de ver artículos periodísticos de las décadas de los 70’s 7 80’s y me da pena que antes el futbol local cobraba páginas completas del diario. Por ejemplo tuve la dicha de ver un artículo sobre la victoria del Internacional Puerto Rico 1-0 sobre los Pumas de la UNAM, entre otros que incluían la desaparecida Copa Abierta de Puerto Rico, también conocida como la Copa Gobernador. Incluso cubrían jugadores boricuas en las ligas universitarias de Estados Unidos. ¿Qué pasa, cuando volveremos a cubrir con la intensidad que su cubría en la era dorada del fútbol? Da pena que en aquella época cando solo jugaban semi-profesionales se les diera mas enfoque que ahora que tenemos una liga profesional, y tenemos a los Islanders.
El jugador de la jornada 4 lo gano indiscutiblemente Gustavo López del River Plate Ponce con un 50% de los votos. En segundo lugar llego el delantero del Bayamón FC, Alan Acevedo. Los nominados para la 5ta jornada los son: Mahamadou Simpara (SFC), Pedro Rosado (AQ), Tomas Piña (AQ), Mauricio Turizo (GCFC), y Roberto Rojas (RPP). El técnico más destacado de las primera 4 jornadas lo gano Walter Fabián Zermatten, claro está, un premio muy bien ganado ya que ha mantenido a su equipo invicto.
TAMPA, FL -- United Soccer Leagues announced the Team of the Week honors for the 11th week of the USL season, honoring Puerto Rico’s Bill Gaudette as the USL First Division Player of the Week and Harrisburg’s Tiyi Shipalane as the USL Second Division Player of the Week.
Last year, the 2008 USL-1 Goalkeeper of the Year started the season off with only two shutouts in the Islanders’ first 12 games. Puerto Rico’s Bill Gaudette appears to be mirroring that campaign in 2009 posting back-to-back shutouts over league-leading Charleston over the weekend after posting just one in his first 12. The pair of 1-0 wins allowed the Islanders to jump from fourth to first in a matter of three days.
In the opening contest Thursday, Battery forward Randi Patterson used his pace to run onto a long ball over the top in the ninth minute. Patterson fired at goal with a first-time effort but Gaudette reacted well and blocked the ball wide. Minutes later Patterson threatened again as he reacted first to another looping ball over the Puerto Rico defense. Gaudette closed down on the striker, forcing Patterson to flick the ball towards the goal, but it was cleared off the line by defender Scott Jones. Late in the game Tyler Hemming whipped a free kick into the middle where Dan Antoniuk met the cross and flicked a header that Gaudette tipped over the bar.
The 1-0 victory Thursday courtesy of defender John Krause’s stoppage time strike handed Charleston their first loss of the year, ending a 12-game unbeaten streak.
In the second meeting Charleston attacked from the starting whistle and came close in only the fourth minute as wide midfielder Chris Williams whipped a cross in from the left. Antoniuk met the ball, but his header dropped harmlessly to goalkeeper Bill Gaudette, who gathered it at the far post and went on to post five more stops in the match for a total of 10 in the two matches.
With Crystal Palace Baltimore pulling within one point of the USL-2 league leaders Friday evening in Bermuda, the Harrisburg City Islanders responded with a 4-0 thrashing of visiting Real Maryland Saturday.
Tiyi Shipalane helped lead the way, setting the tone just five minutes in. Shipalane received the ball from Jason Pelletier in Maryland’s corner and tiptoed around several Monarchs to the top of the goal box. From the 18 yard line, he ripped a shot that slid past Monarchs keeper, and former Islander, David Kern, and into the side netting.
Three minutes after Nicki Paterson made it 2-0 on a penalty in the 16th, Pelletier and Shipalane teamed up again after Mo Odour won the ball in the middle of the field and dished the ball to Shipalane. Shipalane carried the ball 40 yards to Maryland’s corner, and crossed it into the box for Pelletier to head in the net.
In the 59th minute Shipalane scored the only goal of the second half when he capitalized on a failed clearance by the Monarchs. After winning the ball at midfield, he dribbled 30 yards to go one-on-one with Kern, and bury the ball in the back of the net. It was his fifth goal of the season and second of the evening, sealing the final 4-0 score.
Four of Shipalane's five goals on the season have come in matches against the Monarchs. He also has five assists on the year.
TORONTO — Toronto FC added to its attack Tuesday by signing Canadian international forward Ali Gerba.
The 26-year-old from Montreal won't be able to play for Toronto until the MLS transfer window opens July 15, however.
"We are very happy to get Ali in here and under contract," Mo Johnston, Toronto's director of soccer, said in a statement. "Ali is a very strong player, he's quick, he's got an eye for goal and he's someone that will help us down the stretch. We've tried to get him in here before and he's shown a real desire to play here, so we're looking forward to getting him on the pitch with the rest of the squad."
Gerba played most recently for Milton Keynes Dons of England's League One side. He had 10 goals In 24 appearances since signing in August 2008.
He has also had stints with the Toronto Lynx, Montreal Impact, Pittsburgh Riverhounds, Miami Fusion, and GIF Sundsvall, IFK Goteborg, Odd Grenland B.K., AC Horsens in 2007 and FC Ingolstadt in Europe.
He has 11 goals in 23 appearances for Canada and has been named to the Gold Cup roster for next month's CONCACAF championship.
Toronto (5-5-4) has 19 goals in 14 games, tied for seventh in scoring in the 15-team league.
Gerba joins an attack that includes Danny Dichio, Chad Barrett and Pablo Vitti. Canadian rookie O'Brian White is recovering from a knee injury.
NOTES - Toronto FC will host the Puerto Rico Islanders on July 28 in the preliminary round of in the CONCACAF Champions League. The return match will be Aug. 4 in Puerto Rico, CONCACAF announced Tuesday.
The eight preliminary-round winners advance to the group stage, which will begin the week of Aug. 17.
Toronto qualified for the tournament by winning the Nutrilite Canadian Championship.

Charleston, SC. The Charleston Battery squares off against the Puerto Rico Islanders this Thursday night at Blackbaud Stadium in a nationally televised game with kick of set for 8 PM (gates 6:30 PM). The match is the third straight between the two USL-1 rivals; the Islanders defeated the Battery twice last weekend in Bayoman, Puerto Rico and in the process leap-frogged Charleston into first place in the USL-1 tables.
The Battery conceded a 90th minute goal in the first game against the Islanders played last Thursday night. Defender John Krause poked home the winner after collecting a rebound inside the six-yard box.
In the second match played on Saturday night the game was decided by a second-half strike from forward Nicholas Addlery who headed past goalkeeper Keith Wiggans in the 55th minute.
The two defeats were Charleston’s first of the season in all competitions. The Battery had posted a 14-game unbeaten run to start the season including two Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup victories. Charleston remains unbeaten at Blackbaud Stadium heading into this week’s game.
Battery head coach Mike Anhaeuser should have several more players available for selection Thursday with the return to fitness of midfielders Stephen Armstrong and Tsuyoshi Yoshitake. Ian Fuller will not be available for selection as he recovers from an injury sustained in the Battery’s 1-0 win versus Miami in the second round of the U.S. Open Cup.

Battery mourns loss of Chief Operating Office Betsy McAdams Charleston Battery Chief Operating Officer Betsy McAdams passed away last Thursday morning after a courageous battle with brain cancer. Betsy was an original employee of the Charleston Battery since it’s inception in 1993. El destino le trajo una sorpresa a Marco Vélez.
El defensa boricua del Toronto FC en la Major League Soccer (MLS) se proclamó campeón del Nutrilite Championship el pasado jueves, por lo que su onceno se ganó el derecho de representar a Canadá en la Liga de Campeones de la Concacaf. Y para su suerte, su rival en la ronda preliminar será su ex equipo y club de su tierra natal, los Islanders de Puerto Rico.
Y aunque tendrá que enfrentar a un club lleno de amistades, Vélez se mostró emocionado por poder jugar por primera vez como visitante en el estadio Juan Ramón Loubriel.
“Es un orgullo, ya que soy el primer puertorriqueño en llegar a la MLS. Ahora toda la fanaticada de allá va a poder verme en uniforme de MLS y estoy bien orgulloso de volver y representar a Puerto Rico, aunque esté en otro uniforme”, expresó Vélez ayer en entrevista telefónica desde Toronto.
El carolinense vistió la camisa naranja del 2005 al 2007, y previo a la temporada del 2008 fue traspasado al Toronto FC. Además, fue el capitán de la escuadra puertorriqueña que participó en las eliminatorias de la Concacaf del Mundial 2010. Cuando tomó sus maletas hacia Canadá, jamás pensó que algún día enfrentaría a su ex equipo.
“No lo imaginé. Pero sí lo empecé a contemplar después del año pasado, cuando sabíamos que los dos podríamos encontrarnos en la Concacaf, tal vez en la fase grupal. Pero no me imaginé que fuera tan temprano en el torneo”, dijo Vélez.
El defensa aún mantiene fuertes lazos con los Islanders, al punto de que este año formó parte de los entrenamientos antes de partir a Toronto.También se comunica constantemente y ya adelantó que los llamará pronto para comenzar a “caldear los ánimos”.
“Dejé que pasara el wikénd (sin llamarlos), pero esta semana nos estaremos comunicando”, indicó en forma de broma. “Estoy bien entusiasmado de verlos a todos”.
Cuando se le preguntó si tendría el corazón dividido, Vélez no titubeó. “Yo voy al equipo con quien estoy jugando. Yo los apoyé (a los Islanders) el año pasado, pero ahora me toca a mí hacer cosas grandes”.
El partido de ida será el 28 de julio en Toronto, y la vuelta, el 4 de agosto en Bayamón.

Toronto FC defender Marco Velez is looking forward to making a return to his homeland of Puerto Rico to face the Islanders in the Preliminary Round of the CONCACAF Champions League. The Reds secured their place as Canada's representative in the tournament with a stunning 6-1 demolition of Montreal Impact last week, and the win set up the chance for Velez to face his former team. The first match between the teams will be played at BMO Field during the week of July 28, with the return match in San Juan during the week of August 4 (dates to be confirmed).
Velez made 86 appearances for the Puerto Rico Islanders before joining TFC in 2008. "I played three years with them and it is my home country so it will be good to go back," said Velez. "I was pretty excited to get that win against Montreal. It's going to be good because I can go up against my old team and my old coach so it will be a good experience. I get to visit for a few days and there will be plenty of support from my family there to watch the game."
The Islanders play in the United Soccer League First Division and made it to the semi finals of the CONCACAF Champions League earlier this year. "I follow all of their games and they have a good team with good athletes," said Velez. "We also have a good team and we proved it on Thursday, so I expect a hard fought match because they want to do well again this year after making it to the semi finals last year."
Before Velez gets the chance to taste some home cooking, there are plenty of important league games to concentrate on, starting with a home match against New York Red Bulls on Wednesday (kick off 8 p.m. live on GOLTV). "We will be up near the top if we get a win on Wednesday so it's a very important game. We enjoyed wining the trophy, but now we've got to come back and get our heads right and get a win in the league," he said.
El festival futbolístico del ‘Soccer Blast’ está de vuelta para reventar con su contagiosa alegría el Juan Ramón Loubriel bayamonés.
Entre el próximo miércoles 24 y el sábado 28, los pasillos y la grama del ‘bastión’ del fútbol puertorriqueño serán invadidos por los batallones de las nuevas generaciones de futbolistas que acudirán a mostrar su talento y competir por algunos de los muchos premios que estará entregando el reconocido campeonato anual.
“Vamos a tener sobre 2,000 jugadores”, confirmó Richard Vázquez, director del evento. “Hubo una merma respecto al año anterior por la situación económica que está afectando a todos”.
“Pero en el torneo van a jugar 300 equipos. Comoquiera seguimos siendo uno de los torneos más grandes de Puerto Rico y el Caribe”, afirmó Vázquez.
“Y pese a las dificultades económicas, nosotros hemos mantenido el mismo nivel de organización, los premios, todo lo esperado. Eso no se ha afectado. Los equipos tienen sus bultos, premios, etc”, confirmó Vázquez. “Afortunadamente este torneo se ha ganado un prestigio y contamos con el auspicio de muchas compañías. De hecho este año entraron auspiciadores nuevos que se suman a los ya establecidos. Tenemos unos auspiciadores que fueron fundadores del torneo y llevan cinco años con nosotros”.
El torneo nuevamente contará con el apoyo logístico del municipio de Bayamón y de los Islanders.
“Bayamón y los Islanders nos proveen apoyo con el estadio, y todo lo que tiene que ver con la seguridad y limpieza”, dijo Vázquez.
El ‘Soccer Blast’ recibirá equipos femeninos y masculinos de todos los rincones de la Isla, con categorías desde U-14 hasta U-20.
Vázquez recomendó a los equipos que acudieran temprano a sus citas para que no se afectaran, puesto que el torneo “siempre comienza los juegos en punto”.

El cambio en el estado de ánimo era notable en los jugadores de los Islanders de Puerto Rico tras sonar el silbato final el pasado sábado.
De vuelta estaban las sonrisas y abrazos, y no era para menos.
Tras pasar varias semanas tratando de reencontrar la fórmula ganadora que tantos éxitos dio la pasada temporada, la “Tropa Naranja” regresó al primer lugar de la United Soccer Leagues tras completar el sábado la segunda blanqueada corrida, 1-0, sobre el Battery de Charleston. El Battery, que llegó a la Isla como líder, sufrió sus primeras dos derrotas del año en el estadio Juan Ramón Loubriel tras perder también el primer encuentro el pasado jueves.
“Estar en el primer lugar viene con mucho trabajo. Obviamente, empezamos un poco lento, pero ya estamos donde queremos estar. Sabemos que de ahora en adelante va a ser difícil porque todos nos van a querer ganar, pero sólo tenemos que salir con la actitud correcta y venir a trabajar duro todos los días”, expresó el portero Bill Gaudette tras la victoria del sábado.
Los Islanders, quienes ya suman seis partidos en línea sin perder, han demostrado mejoría en la defensa. Luego de permitir 15 goles en los primeros 11 partidos, los naranja sólo han cedido una anotación en los últimos tres juegos.
“Yo creo que estamos más enfocados en lo que estamos haciendo. Los goles del contrario habían venido mucho de balón parado. Todos somos buenos cabeceadores, solamente tenemos que estar concentrados y se está demostrando en la cancha”, dijo por su parte el defensa Cristian Arrieta.
Sin embargo, los Islanders tendrán una ardua labor para defender el puntero, ya que les esperan ocho partidos en línea como visitantes.
“No le tenemos miedo a nadie, les tenemos respeto. Es cuestión de seguir enfocados y si seguimos así, estaremos bien”, concluyó Arrieta.

Ponce- La Perla del sur siempre les complica la vida a los visitantes del River Plate en su Fortaleza del Paquito Montaner, y la historia no fue diferente para los Guerreros Capitalinos. El Atlético San Juan cayó 4-1 en el pasto artificial sureño frente a una hinchada de aproximadamente 2900 personas. La barra brava de River Plate, quienes fueron elegidos como la mejor barra de Puerto Rico por los lectores de FútbolBoricua, Los Borrachos del Tablón mantuvieron un ambiente festivo, y la goleada se celebro como todo un fiestón.
El encuentro comenzó explosivo, con una ofensiva guerrera buscando anotar y ponerse en el marcador temprano. Los dirigidos por Perales así lograron con un golazo del cubano Yaikel Pérez al minuto 13 de la primera mitad. El gol de Pérez fue un despertador para la ofensiva de Ponce.
Los hinchas de Ponce no tuvieron que sufrir por mucho tiempo cuando a los minutos 25 y 26 el delantero Roberto Rojas sorprendió al portero Nick Mele con un cabezazo y un minuto más tarde en un contragolpe lanzo el balón por encima de la cabeza del portero justo cuando él estaba saliendo del arco para arrebatarle el balón. Los dos goles corridos dieron un golpe fatal a la moral guerrera y no habría remontada.
El cubano Lester More al minuto 45, durante tiempo de reposición, anotó un gol antes de que los oncenos se fueran al descanso apuñalando a muerte al Atlético.
El segundo tiempo se marco por una clara dominación del conjunto rojiblanco, quienes pusieron el último clavo en el ataúd del Atlético cuando al minuto 22 de la segunda mitad Roberto Rojas anoto su 3era diana, completando el primer “Hat Trick” de la PRSL 2009.
Con este resultado River Plate comienza a despegarse de los lideras de la tabla, adueñándose del primer lugar. Esta es la segunda vez que el conjunto capitalino visita el Montaner y sale goleado: 5-1 en el 2008 y 4-1 en el 2009. Con esta victoria, River Plate alarga su invicto en casa, ya que desde el comienzo de la era profesional River Plate no ha perdido un solo partido en el césped de su Fortaleza.
Bayamón - El estadio Juan Ramón Loubriel bayamonés fue escenario nuevamente de un duelo de pesos pesados de la Primera División de la United Soccer Leagues (USL-1) entre los Islanders de Puerto Rico y el entonces líder de la liga, Charleston, y ‘la Tropa Naranja’ le repitió la dosis al Battery anoche, logrando una victoria por 1-0 que los catapultó al tope de la tabla.
Los visitantes venían de perder su invicto en un cerrado partido que tuvo lugar en este mismo escenario el pasado jueves y que se decidió en la última jugada del choque, cuando los Islanders anotaron en un de tiro de esquina.
Anoche, el primer tiempo fue una batalla en el medio campo, en busca de filtrar un balón a los delanteros. Las defensivas de ambos equipos apenas permitieron libertades, bloqueando los intentos frente a ambos arcos.
Al minuto 20, el Battery llegó hasta el fondo junto a la portería defendida por Bill Gaudette. Mientras el naranja Kevon Villaroel luchaba por despojar a Christopher Williams, alcanzó a tocar el balón con la mano en el área, pero el silbato no sonó. Un minuto después, Gaudette tuvo que sacar de puños un centro que iba con veneno hacia su área.
Pero sobre la media hora, la tensión se fue al arco de Keith Wiggans con ataques sucesivos del rapidísimo y habilidoso Fabrice Noel, otro de Jonathan Steele que bloqueó un central del Battery, un pase de Cristian Arrieta que se fue muy alto para el cabezazo de Nick Addlery y otro pase de Noel al punto de penal que fue sacado por la defensa.
Un tiro fuerte distante del naranja Sandy Gbandi al 34 fue bloqueado y Charleston generó un rápido contragolpe que forzó a Gaudette. En el siguiente minuto otra vez Gaudette tuvo que salir y manotear un balón justo sobre la línea del área grande. El balón quedó suelto pero el Battery no pudo rematar.
Los minutos finales del primer tiempo fueron con los Islanders presionando. Al 43, Addlery lanzó un tiro lejano que atajó Wiggans. En la siguiente jugada Noel otra vez llegó al fondo, le pasó un gran balón a Noah Delgado que disparó, pero Wiggans le cerró la vía y echó a córner. Krause no pudo conectar y la defensa sacó otra vez a córner. El cobro esta vez fue atrás y Villaroel sacó un cañonazo que fue contra la malla lateral.
Ya en la segunda parte, los naranjas arrancaron buscando el gol.
Al 50, otra vez Steele pasó a Noel, que forzó a la defensa que terminó cometiendo mano al borde del área. Krause cabeceó el cobro, pero otra vez afuera.
Al 54, la misma combinación de Steele a Noel funcionó y el haitiano se sacó una jugada individual de videojuegos y le envió un entro de lujo a Addlery que esta vez cabeceó con efectividad al gol para poner el 1-0 a favor de la ‘Tropa Naranja’, en una gran jugada colectiva.
El gol animó a los locales. Gbandi intentó de lejos al 58. Al 59, Addlery aprovechó un error defensivo y sacó un tirazo que se fue fuera rozando el poste.
Los Islanders, con este triunfo, suman siete triunfos, tres derrotas y cuatro empates, bueno para 25 puntos que los dejan primeros en la tabla.
El próximo partido de los naranjas será la tercera parte de esta serie contra el Battery, pero en Charleston el próximo jueves 25.
Bayamon, Puerto Rico. The Charleston Battery lost a second match in succession 1-0 at the hands of the Puerto Rico Islanders Saturday night at Juan Ramon Loubriel Stadium in front of 2,315. Forward Nicholas Addlery headed past Battery goalkeeper Keith Wiggans midway through the second half to lift the Islanders to victory.
The loss for Charleston (6-2-6, 24 points) means that Puerto Rico (7-3-4, 25 points) will leap-frog Charleston into first place in the USL standings, the Battery drops into second position; the teams will square for a third time in eight days this Thursday night at Blackbaud Stadium.
Charleston attacked from the starting whistle and came close in only the 4th minute as wide midfielder Chris William whipped a cross in from the left. Forward Dan Antoniuk met the ball but his header dropped harmlessly to goalkeeper Bill Gaudette who gathered it at the far-post.
The Battery threatened again in the 11th minute after Tyler Hemming picked out forward Darren Spicer with a precise through-ball. Spicer accelerated to catch the pass but missed the ball with his left-footed shot allowing the Islanders to clear.
Puerto Rico came back at the Battery as the half wore on and came close from a set-piece in the 38th minute. Sand Gbandi swung a corner in from the right but an unmarked John Krause snapped his headed attempt wide of the goal.
In the 43rd minute the Islanders attacked again and forward Nick Addlery found space twenty-five yards out. As the Battery defenders closed him down Addlery fired a shot at the goal forcing Keith Wiggans down to his right to make the save.
Puerto Rico continued to enjoy the majority of the ball after the break and their endeavor was rewarded in the 55th minute after midfielder Fabrice Noel got around defender Nigel Marples on the left flank. Noel chipped a cross into the middle and Nicholas Addlery slammed his header past Keith Wiggans into the back of the goal.
Charleston had a chance to tie it at in stoppage time at the end of the match after substitute winger Scott Buete curled in an inviting cross from the left side. Substitute forward Tom Heinemann stretched to meet the ball but his headed attempted flashed just wide of the near post.
The Battery will have an immediate chance for redemption as both teams head to Blackbaud Stadium this Thursday night for an 8 PM fixture; the game will be broadcast live nationally on FOX Soccer Channel with fireworks to follow the game.

Juncos- En un partido que en papel parecía una victoria segura para los locales, un sorprendente e inspirado onceno académico se alzo con la sorpresa de la jornada, al triunfar 2-1 en un encharcado terreno.
Los primeros 20 minutos se caracterizaron por una fuerte ofensiva Sevillista que se encontraba con una pared defensiva liderada por el capitán del conjunto, Raphael “Mime” Ortiz. Pero los contraataques de la Academia Quintana venían tomando más terreno y madurando el gol, cuando el minuto 25 Ricardo Rosado robo un mal pase del defensa Ian Pagan al portero Maximiliano Torlacoff anotando su primera diana. No pasaron 3 minutos y Rosado de nuevo se puso en el marcador cuando al minuto 28 anoto luego de un contragolpe, que Torlacoff no pudo atajar.
Luego del gol, el equipo de Quintana tendría que jugar con un jugador menos, ya que Agripito fue expulsado del partido al acumular 2 tarjetas amarillas en el partido. El jugador tuvo un altercado fuerte con el central Jesús Lebrón posterior a su expulsión, y tuvo que ser escoltado por uno de sus compañeros fuera del campo.
El equipo local no lograba encontrar el gol. Y ambos oncenos se fueron al descanso con el marcador 2-0. Errores técnicos luego del descanso le costaron al Sevilla la derrota pues Quintana se lanzo a la defensiva y el técnico Sevillista iniciaba cambios defensivos mayormente en vez de optar por el ataque. Aun así la segunda mitad se caracterizo por un dominio casi total del conjunto local que era detenido por la fuerte labor defensiva de Quintana. La hinchada junqueña tendría que esperar al tiempo de reposición para celebrar su primer tanto, cuando defensa, quien en este partido tuvo labores de mediocampista, Mahamadou Simpara cabeceo un tiro centrado al área para poner a los locales en el marcador. No habrían más oportunidades y el Sevilla FC sigue su racha de derrotas consecutiva como local luego de perder su invicto frente al otro conjunto capitalino el Atlético San Juan.
Islanders se alzan a la primera posición de la USL
En el otro enfrentamiento de la noche, los Islanders de Puerto Rico con un gol de Nicolás Addlery lograron derrotar por segunda vez al Battery de Charleston. Dato curioso que se debe resaltar es que la Barra Naranja alzo un banner en repudio al jugador Domenic Mediate. Inclusive el mismo fue abucheado cuando el técnico Colin Clarke cambio a Fabrice Noel por el mismo.
